Intent on destroying ourselves from within, Americans continue to feel compelled to prematurely take sides in the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman tragedy. The President weighed in early. We have Congressman (and “former” Black Panther) Bobby Rush grandstanding with a hoodie in the House of Representatives. We have an undertaker commenting on Martin’s body. We have neighborhood hoodie vigils. We have voice experts weighing in on the 911 calls. We have Congress pushing new legislation for gun control, limits on neighborhood watch and more. It feels surreal, and dangerous.
If Zimmerman murdered Martin, he needs to be punished. But if you listen to the news, it sure sounds like the judgement phase has already passed. The whole environment surrounding the exploitation circus feels just like OJ, and look how well that turned out. But we Americans love us some reality TV and people acting out.
“I am tired of burying young black boys,” said Rep Frederica Wilson.
While I do not doubt her sincerity, according to the FBI 6,470 blacks were murdered last year. 612 more blacks have been murdered since Trayvon was killed on February 26th (including another boy last night in Sanford). Representative Wilson, exactly how is ANY of this supposed to help anything?
What an utter cluster f*ck.
My progressive friends like to point out how evolved we are, how great the world is, and how wonderful it is to exist in “this age.” Indeed. As I’m reading the headline and news of another school shooting, this one with 6 dead 7 dead, I have to admit that I disagree. We’re going in the wrong direction. And I’m wondering what ever happened to the good ol’ days when Columbine shocked us.
