Actor and comedian Bill Cosby talked about the Trayvon Martin / George Zimmerman case recently, saying that the debate over the killing of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer should be focused on guns, not race.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” aired Sunday, Cosby said calling George Zimmerman a racist doesn’t solve anything. Cosby says the bigger question is what Zimmerman was doing with a gun, and who taught him how to behave with it.
I can appreciate the question of behavior, and especially learned behavior. Why do men kill men? This is a relevant and important societal question. But the gun didn’t commit the act, George Zimmerman did. Guns, like knives, baseball bats, rope, swords or plain fists, are simply weapons. We humans are the ones in charge. Whether it’s what’s in our brain or what’s in our heart, that is the direction our conversation should turn. As long as we blame guns, we’ll never get anywhere.
