Howard Jordan is the Chief of Police in Oakland California. Oakland isn’t the nicest town and the police there are very familiar with crime and criminal minds. Yesterday a former student walked into a small college and killed 7 people. Chief Jordan, during an interview on Good Morning America, described the man who murdered them as:
a very chaotic, calculated and determined gentleman that came there with a very specific intent to kill people, and that’s what his motive was and that’s what he carried out
This is the language I would expect from a sociologist, academic, or western romance novelist, not a law enforcement professional. From a Chief of Police I expected adjectives like “dangerous” or even “deranged”, maybe even “psychotic” or “sociopathic.” He even avoids the words “victims” and “murder.” The only thing I can think is that they’re trying to make Oakland appear more civilized. Good luck with that.
