Buried At Work

Sorry for the absence of posts today. A couple tasks turned into avalanches at work and I’ve been head-down since I sat down at my desk. That said, the world keeps on turning, so here are some afternoon news and links that caught my attention:

Sister Toldjah:

You didn't dream that!

Unintended Consequences, Or Not So Unintended

From TownHall:

Obamacare’s employer mandate has small businesses scrambling to reduce their workforce in anticipation of the law’s implementation in 2014. Under the employer mandate, businesses with 50 or more full-time employees have to provide coverage or pay a $2,000 penalty for every worker minus the first 30. Growing businesses have discovered that expanding their workforce beyond 50 fulltime workers is simply too burdensome. In order to survive, many of these companies will have to either scale back the hours of existing employees so that they are no longer classified as fulltime or let them go altogether.

When all of your employees are part-time, you’ve suddenly saved a lot of headaches. No more vacation or sick benefits, no pension or 401k contribution, and certainly no medical or dental. But it’s a net loser for the workforce.

But at a basic level it’s worse: It directly penalizes growth and hiring.

Simultaneously, Weasel Zippers is reporting that Steny Hoyer thinks Foodstamps and Unemployment are great generators of economic stimulus:

“If you talk to economists, they will tell you there are two things that are the most stimulative that you can do — one’s unemployment insurance, the other’s food stamps, okay?”

“Why is that?” he said.  “Because those folks who receive those resources must spend them. And they’ll spend them almost upon receipt. Most economists with whom I talk believe that those with significant discretionary income, that that’s not the case.”

Unbelievable. Here’s the thing. Compare and contrast:

If you’re employed, you’re earning your own income. Maybe it’s only enough for one room of that apartment with a co-worker, but it’s a start. Hopefully you’re learning a skill and practicing it daily at work. With time you may become good at it. The Boss may notice and increase your hours or your pay, or both (because you’re good for business); plus the Boss gives you better work to do that requires higher-level skill. Now you’re out of that apartment and renting a little house. So next you work at becoming very good at the new skills. Time and practice, work and patience… Then the Boss may notice you’re still good for the business and give you a bonus, or even provide basic benefits; plus he gives you an assistant manager position. Now you move into your own home.

If you’re on Foodstamps and Unemployment, there are only two ways to improve your socioeconomic status: have babies and develop a disability. Neither of these is considered a “marketable skill.” There is no progression, no development, no independence. It’s living hand-to-mouth.

Steny Hoyer is a Democrat. Steny Hoyer wants you on Foodstamps and Unemployment. Steny Hoyer says it’s the best thing you can do to stimulate the economy. Connect the dots…

Hapless Brits See London in Chaos as Olympics Near

Preparing for an Olymics is a serious endeavor. London is having it’s share of issues already, and the games are still 10 days away. Road alterations have already caused traffic problems on a massive scale, including a 32 mile backup on the M4. They’re having security issues, from the Daily Mail:

The fiasco surrounding G4S security at the Olympics continued today as only 30 out of 200 staff turned up for work at a cycling venue in Surrey.

The huge absence of personnel at the road-race circuit in Box Hill came as it was revealed only 4,200 of the contracted 10,400 guards have so far reported for duty across the country.

Given all of the threats of terrorism, I wouldn’t be too enthusiastic about working Olympic Security, either. But there’s more. The Telegraph is reporting:

More than 200 taxi drivers have brought central London to a halt in a protest at the Olympic Games lanes.

Apparently the cabbies are upset because they are prohibited from using the A4, the direct connection between Heathrow and central London. Who can blame them?

Interesting that we didn’t hear about problems in the games at Salt Lake in 2002. It seems that perhaps Romney knew what he was doing.

Obama: Socialism Masquerading as Gratitude and Charity

There has been a lot said about Obama’s remarks over the weekend:

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

First, it’s important that I point out that I am sick and tired of having to give this President the benefit of the doubt. (When there are many angry Americans calling him Socialist, you’d think he would work hard to avoid any appearance of socialist tendencies. But he just doesn’t bother.) What he was starting to say before he went off the rails, was that a lot of wealthy, successful Americans have an internal desire to give something back, because they know they didn’t get there on their own. Unfortunately Obama tripped over his nuts again and made it sound like they wouldn’t have gotten there at all if it weren’t for “Somebody else.”

What the President doesn’t seem to understand is that most successful people feel a sense of gratitude for their good fortune. And Obama’s right, it can be gratitude towards family members, teachers, mentors, partners, employees, or all of the above and a lot more (including luck). This is why these people give. They make donations to their churches and hospitals, they give to local non-profits, they volunteer for service activities, they provide financial support for community projects, … it’s a list that goes on and on. The point is that these successful people are giving back to their communities in many, many ways.

But this is where the President’s vision and mine diverge dramatically: The President wants to externalize your gratitude and use that money, the funds that you would donate to your chosen cause(s), to go to the Government who will decide how your money is then “invested.” And he thinks you’re selfish for not showing more gratitude for those who came before and created “the American system that allows you to thrive.”

It’s a bizarre worldview, where our leader insists that I ignore the taxes and fees that I pay to maintain my roads and infrastructure, forget the bills I pay for electricity and gas and maintenance on the infrastructure that delivers them, completely set aside my own contribution to my business’ success, and embrace the notion of additional taxation as donation to the Government that can do so much more with my money than I can, rather than directing my funds to my own community… Because I’m thankful. Wow. On so many levels, wow.

Most fundamentally, the people who would conflate charity and taxation understand neither. If President Obama wants people like me to stop calling him socialist, maybe he should spend a little time acting like something else.

Progressive Madness

When I heard that comedian George Lopez did a bit “taking on” Sheriff Joe Arpaio I was expecting something like:

Dayum, Joe! It wasn’t enough to put prisoners in pink jumpsuits dude? It wasn’t enough to make a tent city in the blazing Arizona heat? It wasn’t enough to have a Federal Judge slap your stupid ass?

No it wasn’t. You just keep yapping on and on about those immigrants when there’s plenty of crime you can focus on (regardless of ethnicity!). But noooo!

What do you do instead? … Oh Look !! Obama’s birth certificate!! And you JUST. CAN’T. STOP. man. Over three years in and you’re still going after the President’s Birth Certificate? … dude … The Birth Certificate. I mean, even Trump isn’t hot for that one.

*Shakes head*

[Audience laughs and claps]

Obviously I’m not a comedian, I am a squirrel. You have to sprinkle the above with George Lopez professional humor to make it … you know… funny. The point is there’s plenty to pick on Joe about. Plenty. He’s low hanging fruit; easy pickin. His activities have been a hanging curve ball; home run material, baby. Which is why George’s actual bit is not just disappointing, it’s tragic. The poor bastard is such a tool he completely short circuited. His actual rant on HBO is a perfect example of the shallow Progressive thought pool (and honestly, it reminded me of #Occupy):

Sheriff Joe in Arizona – f–k you you f–king puto. How about that? F–k you. You fat mother f–ker. F–k you. I said I was going to talk some s–t. F–k you Sheriff Joe you f–king puto. F–k you. F–k you.

[Audience laughs and claps]

Very compelling. I wasn’t convinced before. But now? Well hearing an argument like that, and especially delivered with such style and ease? George, you had me at f–k you.

I’m sure Al Franken is already in contact with George regarding a run for Congress.
