Kirk Cameron and Lessons on Tolerance

Andrew Breitbart understood the institutional left. In his CPAC 2012 speech he said:

they’ve held over our heads, with contempt, the false narrative of their innate tolerance. The least tolerant people you will ever meet in your entire lives. I know it. I live it every single day.

And now Kirk Cameron is learning exactly what tolerance means. Kirk is a Christian who holds to a strong value system. In an interview with Piers Morgan he started a bit of a firestorm stating his belief that homosexuality and gay marriage are unnatural, detrimental and destructive. The backlash was immediate.

In response to his comments, a group of ’80s and ’90s sitcom stars got together to make a video mocking him (to raise awareness about a serious threat to our civil rights–Kirk Cameron’s stupid opinions), calling themselves CCOKC: Child Celebrities Opposing Kirk Cameron. Brice Beckham explained, “This just seemed like a way to poke fun at an idea we don’t agree with.”

Note: They are taking homosexuality, a very, very sensitive issue in our culture, that brings out strong feelings on both sides, and while engaging in a very personalized, individualized attack, simultaneously suggest it’s “Just poking fun.” They even go on to say, “When Kirk heard about the spoof, he didn’t have any bad feelings – in fact, he thought it was funny,” a source explained. “He doesn’t hate anybody.” Let that soak in for a moment: They acknowledge it isn’t about hate while they vilify him with a smile on their faces. This way, if Kirk reacts strongly, they can say, “Hey lighten up! We were just poking fun!”

Interestingly enough, however, Cameron is quoted as saying:

“When you’re sitting across the table from someone who knows what your perspective is on issues–and I’ve been very consistent, I don’t think anything I said surprised anybody as a Bible-believing Christian,” he said. “But to then take some answers, reduce an important and personal and sensitive issue to a four-second sound bite and toss it into a community to start a political bonfire and really upset people that you’re saying that you’re looking to protect – I think is disingenuous.”

Now that doesn’t exactly sound like he’s laughing this off. And why would he? You can find plenty of reaction: “Kirk Cameron Gay Comments Reaction” Search at Google. Wade into the comments sections if you have the stomach for the left’s tolerance. What you’ll find is logic twisted, morality redefined to suit, and anti-Christian stereotypes and conspiracy theories of every flavor.

But make no mistake: This isn’t a joke response. The video isn’t poking fun when millions are taking it seriously. When this happens it’s a lot more than a spoof. This isn’t people laughing at Kirk Cameron for his silly gay opinion. It’s people who disagree with him attacking him for his belief system and telling him, and by extension all of the rest of us, to “Shut up.” Tolerance, indeed.
